Taekwon-Do is a devastating form of self defence. You cannot perform techniques with full power against fellow students as that would cause injury. The patterns were invented by General Choi so that practitioners can perfect techniques through constant repetition. Taekwon-Do do patterns are rhythmic, powerful, precise and graceful, and they help students to develop sparring and breaking skills. You should perfect each pattern before moving onto the next, and they should be performed with realism - students should imagine that they are dealing with a series of attacks by opponents from different angles
There are 24 patterns in Taekwon-Do, representing 24 hours in a day. To achieve your black belt, you have to learn 9 patterns. The patterns get more complex as you progress, but in reality you are only learning one or two new techniques as you learn a new pattern.
Youtube has a large collection of video patterns free to view, we recommend the following links if you are interested in seeing a good example of the Colour belt and a selection of Black Belt patterns.
